Today's NOT the last day you can contribute to support this site

It's a new tax year, so you've missed the chance to contribute to your favorite tax-exempt charity for the 2009 tax year. Fortunately, that's no problem with ThisCantBeHappening.net, because TCBH is not tax-exempt (I don't have the money to hire a fancy lawyer). That means if you value this site, if you come regularly to read the articles, you can make 2010 the year you start supporting it. The articles that run here don't appear magically. They have to be researched, reported and written. Your friendly journalist/webmaster has to be paid (and feed his family!). So screw the tax break! Give free media a break! Donate to ThisCantBeHappening! All I'm looking for is a microdonation: $5 or $10 a year from each regular reader. That's just 43 cents or 86 cents a month! If you value this site, send a check to me at POB 846, Ambler, PA 19002 or go to the Paypal button.

ATTENTION! If you are on the blast list for getting notices about new posts on this site, please resend your email address to me at dlindorff@yahoo.com. Because of a corruption of my email software, I can no longer access the mailing list. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Mass. Mayhem: The Democrats’ Debacle and the Perfect Moment for Party Progressives

The media punditry, corn-fed on conventional wisdom, are all atwitter about Tuesday's Democratic debacle in Massachusetts, saying the trouncing of the Democratic candidate for the late Sen. Edward Kennedy’s seat, state Attorney General Martha Coakley, by upstart State Senator Scott Brown means Democrats in Congress should abandon plans to push through a House-Senate compromise health bill, and instead just go with the Senate’s version of health “reform” legislation, thus circumventing a certain Republican filibuster attempt.

Cuba is Missing...From US Reports on the International Response to Haiti's Earthquake

In the critical early days following Haiti's 7.0 earthquake, only two mainstream corporate US media outlets reported on Cuba’s response to the tragedy. One was Fox News, which claimed, wrongly, that the Cubans were absent from the list of neighboring Caribbean countries providing aid. The other was the Christian Science Monitor (a respected news organization that recently shut down its daily print edition), which reported correctly that Cuba had almost immediately flown in 30 doctors to the stricken nation.

The Real Obama: Sticking it to the Working Stiffs

If you want to see the unvarnished, true nature of our latest president, you need look no farther than two issues: whether to tax health plans that are deemed “too generous” and whether or how to tax the banks that brought about the financial crisis.

Soldier Marc Hall’s Freedom Rap Song Lands him in Liberty Jail

In the ironically named Liberty County Jail since December 11 sits Army Specialist and Iraq War veteran Marc Hall, a rap musician who had the audacity to write a song attacking the Pentagon for subjecting him to a so-called stop-loss order after he had finished his Army tour and had returned from a posting in Iraq.

Hall, whose hip-hop alias is Marc Watercus, wrote the song and sent it to the Pentagon as a protest. His commander at Ft. Stewart initially had him arrested after he went to his base commander to protest his stop-loss order. He had planned to leave the service when his contract was up on Feb. 27. The Pentagon then upped the charges, claiming that in sending his song to the Pentagon, he had “communicated a threat” to he military. In the song lyrics, Hall says he will shoot officers if he is stop-lossed.

Democrats and the Corporate Media: Looking for Green Shoots in an Economic Desert

So much for economic “green shoots.”

The Obama administration and the Federal Reserve, along with the servile corporate media, have been quick to grasp at and trumpet every little suggestion that things might be improving, as they did when the Labor Dept. announced last week that new unemployment claims had dropped to “just” 434,000, from a high of 684,000 in the week ended March 28 or last year.

Or when the Commerce Dept. reported last month that November housing starts had risen by 8.9% compared to the prior month.

American Justice is Blind, But Her Scales are Rigged

When it comes to justice in America, the scales definitely badly need a visit by an inspector from the Department of Weights and Standards.

Consider the recent decision by Federal Judge Ricardo Urbina tossing out the federal indictment of five Blackwater (Now Xe) mercenaries for the 2007 slaughter of 14 innocent Iraqis in Baghdad.

The judge found that federal prosecutors had improperly used incriminating statements which he said had been “compelled” from the Blackwater personnel under “threat of job loss.”

Are US Forces Executing Kids in Afghanistan? Americans Don't Even Know to Ask

The Taliban suicide attack that killed a group of CIA agents in Afghanistan on a base that was directing US drone aircraft used to attack Taliban leaders was big news in the US over the past week, with the airwaves and front pages filled with sympathetic stories referring to the fact that the female station chief, who was among those killed, was the “mother of three children.”

But the apparent mass murder of Afghan school children, including one as young as 11 years old, by US-led forces (most likely either special forces or mercenary contractors working for the Pentagon or the CIA), was pretty much blacked out in the American media. Especially blacked out was word from UN investigators that the students had not just been killed but executed, many of them after having first been rousted from their bedroom and handcuffed.

Sue the Bastards: Why are only Republican AGs Threatening Court Action against Health `Reform' Legislation?

Attorneys General from 13 states--all of them Republicans--are saying that they are going to sue to block the health insurance reform bill if, when it is finally passed, it still includes a measure giving Nebraska an extra $100 million in Medicaid funds. They charge that this “bribe” was used to get Nebraska’s conservative Democratic Senator Ben Nelson to join fellow Democrats to get the Senate’s version of the bill passed.

What a Hell of a Year! Good Riddance to it!

You know, the year 2009 started out kind of nicely. We watched Barack Obama take the oath of office, serenaded by the awesome Aretha Franklin (wearing her awesome hat), after first hearing Pete Seeger sing the real Woody Guthrie verses to "This Land Is Your Land" on the steps of the Lincoln Monument.

And we saw Congress pass the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, to correct a scum-sucking decision by the US Supreme Court's conservative woman-hating, corporation-loving majority that said women (and minorities and the elderly) couldn't sue for pay discrimination unless they acted within six months of the initiation of the violation, even if they didn't learn about it until years later.

Great stuff.

But basically, that was it. The promise of an Obama Presidency, and of the huge new Democratic majorities in the House and Senate, came and went like the puff of dust from a dessiccated puffball, leaving behind nothing but a leathery dry little husk of fungus--an apt description of Democrats in Washington today.
